do you guys ever read refinery 29?

it's a pretty cute little online fashion magazine, headquartered (i believe) in chicago. they do "local" coverage of chicago, nyc and la.

in general, i would say it's safe to say that fashion magazines (either traditional or online versions) are prone to hyperbole. however, sometimes it's just too much.

on the drive home from cape cod a couple of sundays ago, i listened to the entire west side story soundtrack, and sang loudly the whole time.

it was one of the more enjoyable parts of the weekend.

i just can't stop:

addressing the subject

i design shoes.

that's my gig.

i don't design clothing.

that's not my gig. i never studied apparel design, i don't know much about it. i'm pretty comfy with that.

however, a number of years ago, i worked for a designer who shall remain nameless. she, apparently was not comfy with that, and decided that i could design (or re-design) clothing.

so, she gave me the responsibility of re-designing the seasonless "key items" that had been great sellers in the past.

that makes sense, right? since they were great sellers, it is probably best to entrust the only person on your design staff who knows nothing about apparel to re-design them. right?

wrong. obviously.

and i now have photographic evidence:

yesterday, i spied one of the only dresses i've ever "designed" on the website of a high-end consignment store in brooklyn.

i'd almost entirely forgotten about this badly conceived part of my design career. but here it was, back in my face, with hilarious results!

honestly, i think this dress is butt-ugly not so pretty. i'm glad that someone thought it was nice enough to slap down some cash for it. perhaps someone will take it home and love it a second time. i hope so.

but mostly i am just laughing at the reminder of the fact that...

i am definitely not an apparel designer.

nope!

(omg! what if i see someone in my neighborhood wearing it, this spring!?)

a trend that won't be a trend

nyc & copenhagen fall fashion weeks have both been responsible for this:

i've had this idea for a blog post for a while, that has to do with raves, 90's nyc club kids & platform shoes. i'm probably spoiling the fun by even mentioning it, but although i haven't had the time to actually sit down and write it, this video from prada actually is getting me really inspired. 

the dancing and the costume-y-ness about it really actually reminds me of the fun and funny feeling of getting dressed up and going out dancing...

so, in anticipation of what's upcoming, i hope you enjoy it.

have i mentioned to you how much i've been enjoying writing this blog?

the reason that i started to write it was as a reminder to myself of how much i love fashion, and style, and the opportunities that we all have to express ourselves with the way we look every day.

sometimes that excitement extends to other things- like an amazing meal,  an eclectic home, or something that just strikes me as funny.

as far as i'm concerned, those are the things that bring some style into our every day lives. i love the stories behind things, even if we don't know what those stories are.... just make them up for yourself!

today i find myself wearing a funny little combo.

yesterday, i was inspired to start wearing white thermal shirts again. these were a staple for me in high school, and somehow, i'd completely forgotten about them. perhaps it's my (very atypical) tanned skin, that got me reconsidering white.

but of course, i was heading out to work today, and realized that i probably shouldn't be a carbon copy of my 16 year old self, olive green cargo pants, included.

thank god for a high-low mix. a couple of necklaces solve the problem:

the shorter one is a family heirloom. it's very very pale pink coral beads, on a hand knotted strand. it belonged to my paternal grandmother, and i wore it on my wedding day.

the longer one is a piece of plastic chain that i bought a trims store here in manhattan, and paid about $1.35 for. 

i've never worn them together, but i love the combo.

the shirt, btw, is a men's bvd long sleeved thermal undershirt.

i'm feeling very much like myself in this combo today, and so i thought i'd share it.

maybe it'll inspire you to try a new high-low combo? or maybe to leave a comment, describing a favorite combo that makes you feel particularly like yourself.

or maybe you'll just think it's funny. which is surely ok by me....

the new math

i really really wanted to buy this t-shirt that i saw in harajuku today. it was cheap, and i came really close to getting it, because i thought it was so funny...

and then i realized that i won't ever wear it.

and since i'm on this kick where, instead of buying everything that i happen to appreciate, i just... appreciate it. or, take a photo if i feel like i kinda need to "own" it.

so here's the shirt i didn't buy. i hope that wasn't too big a build up. i really think it's funny:
