feeling the south

way back in the spring, someone told me that my every day look was taking a turn toward dixie.

"you're looking quite southern these days"

huh?

i'm an east coast w.a.s.p, through and through. i couldn't be further from a southern.

but perhaps i've taken the comment to heart?

i just finished making my very first batch of coleslaw, which i intend to eat with the jerk chicken my husband is making.

while we eat it, we'll be watching my new tv obsession....

everyone knows that food trucks have become all the rage in hip cities like los angeles, new york and portland.

i even heard recently about a beer truck, in portland.

but, this morning i have learned about the ne plus ultra in mobile hospitality:

west is best

i can't get enough of the west coast.

armen and i just booked a trip to visit the pacific north west region in a couple of months.

we'll be going to (one of our favorite u.s. cities) portland, oregon,

staying at the new mcmenamins crystal hotel.

then a quick visit to the oregon coast, where we'll stay in astoria, oregon,

at the new-ish commodore hotel.

and then, we're off to explore vancouver, british columbia,

with the victorian hotel as our home base.

although we know portland fairly well, and have friends to show us around in vancouver, i would still love to have any recommendations on things to do, great places to shop, eat and drink....

particularly for astoria and the northern oregon coast.

please let me know if you have any!

i really fell in love with copenhagen, when my husband & i visited in september.

i've followed this blog, partially because i like to live vicariously her new life there.

she & her husband have just opened a cafe, and i think it's a lovely reason to plan another trip.

today, i got one of the most dramatic haircuts of my life. (i believe that it would be #2 on the list- #1 being the time i went from having about 2 total feet of length, to about... 2 cm. no photographic evidence exists of #1, unfortunately.)

philly

although i grew up in philadelphia, i hardly ever have the chance to visit anymore.

last weekend, my husband and i were there so that we could attend the opening reception at a gallery that is showing my dad's artwork.

one of the great things about the town is that there is such a range of architectural styles. the two photos were taken within a block or so of each other, and reflect such different genres of americana.

speaking of architecture.... the gallery is owned by a local architect, who has his own office in the back of the building. the space was such a nice combination of a newer aesthetic and the very old elements of a very old building:

this is me, in the bathroom.

various measuring sticks made the small hallway between the gallery & office more visually appealing.

the opening was a great success- the place was packed! it was fun to see lots of old family friends....

saturday was a beautiful day....

my husband, mother and i went to the philadelphia art museum, which is a gorgeous building...

... and had a delicious (and very pink) lunch at granite hill restaurant, in the museum.

and collected the above examples of even more architectural styles and combos on the walk back to my parents house....

philly is a super fun town, and has lots of art and (obviously) architectural things to explore... it's totally worth checking out the scene over a spring weekend.

oh, and i didn't even mention the number of great restaurants. send me an email if you go, and i'll give you a list of my favorites!
